SAVE THE SLED DOGS!
A recent article by the Vancouver Sun revealed that the Howling Dog Tours manager who killed 100 dogs the company decided to massacre due to decrease of business, tried to contact the BC SPCA (British Columbia Society for the Prevention and Cruelty to Animals) for help on more occasions. The BC SPCA didn’t investigate the business and turned down the request to shelter the dogs, claiming the dogs were not adoptable.
A group by BC Premier Gordon Campbell is now investigating this case. Depending on the results of the inquiry, the BC Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act will be reformed. The Act, referring to laws 100 year old, declares that cats and dogs are considered as property and there is no regulation in the act addressing businesses that work with animals. For this reason the Howling Dog Tours has not been shut down for acts of cruelty against its animals despite slaughtering 100 dogs, showing once more that the law often protects the rights of the owners but not the rights of animals.
We must raise our voices to have new legislation that regulates the roles of all animal welfare threateners . The BC SPCA and all animal shelters in British Columbia must have strict regulations to rescue and save the animals in danger.
The premier task force will report to Agriculture Minister Ben Stewart suggesting to reform the Act by March 25th, 2011. Let’s support the non profit association Whistler 100 to ensure the reform is in favor of animal welfare. The Act need a immediate change and we must pull together and demand that change.
